Chasing a Niche, or Not

Pick a niche. Settle down. Choose a specialty. Build your brand.

You’ve heard the advice and so have I.

The ‘experts’ claim that choosing a singular focus is the path to success and wealth, that it allows you to target your audience and build a brand. It’s less confusing if you only focus on one thing.

But, choosing only one thing to read about, talk about and live day in and day out is BORING.

Variety is the spice of life.

Variety in our preferences for entertainment, food, fun and friends is what makes life interesting and keeps us going.

Why should my business be any different?

The three main areas I am most fascinated with, that I am most passionate about are:

  1. self-discovery and personal growth
  2. creative self-expression
  3. self-employment and entrepreneurship

These are the areas I am going to write about most, talk about most and teach about most often.

Of course, I’m also interested in other things and I’ll write and talk about them here at The Dreaming Café because that’s what friends do…they talk about and share all the big and little things that catch their fancy and get them excited.

I have been working with several different coaches the past few weeks and they are helping me see that who I am and what my business is can’t be expressed in a single focused niche. That’s not me, and that’s not my business.

I am still working to pull it all into a single vision, but this is what it’s starting to look like…

This one resonates with me. I have been feeling the need to go beyond Present Day Nomads as that is keeping me limited to one interest of mine, which at the moment is NOT a top priority in my life, as things have changed in the last year since I started that blog.

Like you, I have many interests, and I have been ignoring my creative self-expression for way too long. I love photography. It’s an art form for me, but I haven’t done any serious photography in ages. It is time to re-evaluate what I am doing and add some real fun to my life.

Where my gifts and people’s needs intersect is where my niche is…helping owners rehome their pet themselves…It makes life so much easier to give a short explanation of my who,do what and why,and then…I get asked other pet related questions,or someone in need that I could help gets.I also have a variety of other interests, but it’s too confusing to explain to other than close friends. This way I come across in an understandable way,and if they don’t like pets,we won’t discuss things any further. If they like pets they won’t ramble about FeFe,but rather ,I have directed the conversation to an area of pet topics that I’d rather discuss.I got a pet sitting gig from this elevator speech, and I got a chance to help a friend rehome her dog when I pet sat for her…so I think it’s if people like you or not,as to how you might work together, and find opportunities to serve, without rambling too much.

I love this post, Sandy. What’s the point of being a free agent if you don’t have the option of exploring all your interests. Part of being a entrepreneur is having the license to create a business that meets your individual preferences and needs and for many of us, that means NOT niching so specifically that we limit ourselves. What fun to be able to weave other interests into our businesses as our worlds expand. Thank you, Sandy for pointing this out. What a perfect post.

I agree- I started blogging about working at home, but quickly found that I wanted to write about other things- kids, homeschooling, pets, life…

As far as business, I dabble in several things- I bore easily :-)

    Check it out”
