Why I Love Twitter

Current Events – I am more informed about current and world events now than at any time in the past when I watched the news. Most local and news programs are filled with fluff. Twitter alerts me to events as they are happening all over the world.

World Views – Since I Follow people from around the globe I am exposed to a wide variety of world views, especially about world events. It is both interesting and thought provoking to read what other people in countries outside the United States think and feel.

Interesting People – I’ve met some amazing people through Twitter. I’ve met famous artists, authors, entrepreneurs, spiritual teachers, environmentalists, and a number of leaders in a wide variety of fields. Many of these people I only know from a distance via their Tweets and blogs, but some I’ve talked to and visited with in person and some have now become friends.

New Ideas – Following so many people from around the world and from many different fields and backgrounds I am constantly exposed to new ideas and new ways of thinking. The new ideas span the gamut from health, nutrition and sustainable living, to new ideas about business to how to make the world a better place for all people.

Fun events – I am constantly alerted about fun events and opportunities to learn and meet new people. Some are live events, some are paid, some are free, some are online. But, without Twitter I wouldn’t know about even one percent of these events. Some of the events I attend, but even the ones I don’t I still learn a lot from the people who did attend and who share their experiences.

Community – Once you start meeting and talking to people a real sense of community develops. You meet people you can relate to and who share common interests. You care about people and you want to help them. You re-tweet their messages, you offer support, you laugh with them and you cry with them. And, they, more often than not, offer you the same.

Potential – When I am on Twitter, reading, watching, posting, I am often moved by the potential that Twitter and other social media has to impact and change the world. I see people openly discussing world events such as the ongoing BP Gulf Oil Spill. I’ve seen potential solutions offered, I’ve seen people volunteer, I’ve seen fundraising efforts and I’ve watched as people pulled together.

Voice - Twitter gives me a voice. I can use that voice to connect with people and to inform and educate through my business and my personal life. It gives me the opportunity to be heard, to make a difference and to help others. If we all use Twitter for our best voice it offers hope that we can all get along and work together to help one another and to make the world a better place.

I am just getting the hang of Twitter. I love the fact it’s like endless headlines to a multitude of different topics. It is a bit overwhelming to me sometimes tho. It moves so fast and I don’t have the time I’d like to watch and read. is there a secret to keeping informed and keeping up?

Excellent point, Iris and I agree completely. I, too have reached out to people I have admired from afar and would have never had access to outside of Twitter or their blog. And, more often than not, they have responded and corresponded. They may be well known, but they are just a real person like me (us).

Thank you for taking the time to read and comment.

I’ve always liked the fact that I can connect with the people I’ve admired over the years. And quite a few of them have answered me back, which is always a thrill. Sometimes when you admire from afar, you put people on a higher plane than they need to be. Conversation with them brings them back down to earth, and even if they turn out to be just human beings rather than ideals, with everything THAT entails, it’s a valuable experience!
