Book Review – Rework

I read Reworkby Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson founders of 37signals in one evening and was completely blown away.

It is written in a style that reminds me of Seth Godin. The chapters are short, concise and turns conventional business thought and wisdom on its’ ear.

Some chapters had me nodding my head in agreement, happy to see my unconventional beliefs in print and other chapters had me shaking my head and rethinking some of my ideas.

Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson logically argue for their way of thinking and by the end of the page you are wondering why you didn’t see the wisdom of their ideas yourself a long time ago.

Some of the ideas in the book I have discovered on my own, especially since going out on my own, but I wish I this book had been around years ago. I would have saved a lot of time and effort and been much more productive. I might have even gone out on my own much sooner.

A sampling of a few of my favorites:

Workaholics: Working more doesn’t mean you care more or get more done. It just means you work more. (I needed to read this chapter several years ago.)

Scratch Your Own Itch: The easiest, most straightforward way to create a great product or service is to make something you want to use.

Start a Business, not a Startup: A business without a path to profit isn’t a business, it’s a hobby.

Decommoditize Your Product: Make you part of your product or service. Make it something no one else can offer.

Let Your Customers Outgrow You: When you let your customers outgrow you, you’ll most likely wind up with a product that’s basic-and that’s fine. Small, simple, basic needs are constant. There’s an endless
supply of customers who need exactly that.

This book is a must read for the creative, independent entrepreneur (starter) who wants to make it on his/her own, doing his/her own thing. This book will support many of the beliefs you already hold and blow some of them out of the water.

I will be reading this book again and again to remind myself that doing things my way is okay.
