In Monday’s post, “What do I Want? What do You Want?” I invited you to join me in creating an art journal/dream board.
I have reflected and journaled on the question “what do I want?” for years and have a pretty solid understanding of what I want. But, after watching the movie “The Women” I wanted to try something different.
I am curious. By approaching the question What do I want? from a visual perspective, a way of processing information that is not normal for me, I am wondering if I will discover something new. Will I undercover some hidden desire that I have yet to acknowledge?
This afternoon, ‘create vision board’ was number three on my to-do list. I don’t know why I called it a vision board when on Monday I called it a dream board. But, I think I like vision board better.
When I first started, I admit, I was a little intimidated by that giant, white sheet of poster paper.
So, I tried to think of it like a giant mind-map and approached it the same way.
I began by writing the question “what do I want?” right in the middle of the page along with a little red stick figure that I normally draw to represent me. Since I am trying to approach this process with an open mind and not just replace the words in my journal with pictures, I got out my paintbrushes and watercolors and painted the question instead of writing it with markers.
A picture of my new vision board is at the end of this post. It is a little empty and white right now. Over the following weeks I will begin gathering images and anything else that calls to me and answers the question what do I want?. I’ll use tape and glue to attach the images and I may even attempt to paint a few pictures.
If you want to share a picture of your dream/vision/art journal board and share your thoughts on this process, email me at Sandy@TheDreamingCafe.com and I’ll post them right along with mine each Wednesday over the next few weeks.

Hi Kirsten,
Lovely! I think you are right, this may be a great time in your life to do this. Post it on your blog and I can share the link with my readers.
Thanks,
Sandy
Hi Sandy,
This is a wonderful exercise. I plan to dive into this as soon as I close this show. I think the show I am doing now will be the last one for awhile since I don’t see anything on the horizon that I am interested in auditioning for. It will be time for me to do some re-vamping and re-visioning. I’m looking forward to it!
Best,
Kirsten
Woohoo!! Looking forward to it.
OK–am getting out the crayons and colored pencils. I’ll see about catching the movie “The Women” this weekend. Should have a photo to share with you shortly!
Sandy, I just did this project a couple of weeks ago–made it a visual journal. So proud–I painted and everything. Then last weekend someone (no one is confessing) spilled water on it and it all stuck together!
Was able to carefully tear some of the pages apart. Not pretty, but may take some pics anyway. The best experience!!! Things came out that I didn’t know were there!
Hi Dee, I just emailed you about this idea. Loved to have a buddy on the journey. Sandy
Sandy,
Neat idea sharing the evolution of your vision board with readers. I have also been thinking it is time to re-examine what I want and doing a mind map or vision board. Want a buddy in this process? Ever since Follow Through Camp with Alice and Barbara, my mind has been trying out numerous directions to go with my work. Should be an illuminating venture. –Dee
