Vision Board Part II

§ October 29th, 2009 § Filed under Learning & Personal Growth § 1 Comment

Last Wednesday I talked about sharing a new visual process to explore the question “What do I want?”

Well, it’s a lot harder than I thought.

My vision board is hanging up in my home office and although I’ve added a few things to it, it is still very bare. Plus, the things I’ve added aren’t really calling to me. Yes, they are things I want, but not in a way I imagined things on my vision board would. I put them up mainly because the deadline I had announced was quickly approaching and I had nothing on it.

My vision board has come to not only represent the potential of exploring what I want in a visual way, but also a reflection of what is going on in my life right now.

I have decided, that although I will continue to post and share this visual journey, I need to sit with the emptiness, the not-knowing. I need to let the emptiness and open space reflected back at me from my blank vision board to remind me that I just need to be in this in-between place a little while and not push the process.

Thank you for sharing this journey with me.

Art Journal-Dream Board

§ October 21st, 2009 § Filed under Exploring Creativity, Ideas, Painting, Pictures § 9 Comments

In Monday’s post, “What do I Want? What do You Want?” I invited you to join me in creating an art journal/dream board.

I have reflected and journaled on the question “what do I want?” for years and have a pretty solid understanding of what I want. But, after watching the movie “The Women” I wanted to try something different.

I am curious. By approaching the question What do I want? from a visual perspective, a way of processing information that is not normal for me, I am wondering if I will discover something new. Will I undercover some hidden desire that I have yet to acknowledge?

This afternoon, ‘create vision board’ was number three on my to-do list. I don’t know why I called it a vision board when on Monday I called it a dream board. But, I think I like vision board better.

When I first started, I admit, I was a little intimidated by that giant, white sheet of poster paper.

So, I tried to think of it like a giant mind-map and approached it the same way.

I began by writing the question “what do I want?” right in the middle of the page along with a little red stick figure that I normally draw to represent me. Since I am trying to approach this process with an open mind and not just replace the words in my journal with pictures, I got out my paintbrushes and watercolors and painted the question instead of writing it with markers.

A picture of my new vision board is at the end of this post. It is a little empty and white right now. Over the following weeks I will begin gathering images and anything else that calls to me and answers the question what do I want?. I’ll use tape and glue to attach the images and I may even attempt to paint a few pictures.

If you want to share a picture of your dream/vision/art journal board and share your thoughts on this process, email me at Sandy@TheDreamingCafe.com and I’ll post them right along with mine each Wednesday over the next few weeks.

What do I Want? What do You Want?

§ October 19th, 2009 § Filed under Exploring Creativity, Learning & Personal Growth, Painting, Pictures, Writing & Creativity § 8 Comments

In the movie ”The Women”, Mary, played by Meg Ryan, discovers her husband is having an affair. Her world begins to fall apart. She then goes through a very interesting process to answer the question – “What do I want?”

I love the way she processes this question. It reminds me of a vision board or art journaling exercise.

She uses words, pictures, bits of cloth, sketches she’s made, letters written to herself, and anything that calls to her. She pins everything up on a board where she can see it every day. She begins to awaken to, and remember the things that used to bring her joy and delight. She begins to rediscover who she is.

I like that she took her time and didn’t try and do it all in one afternoon. I like that she didn’t begin with any preset ideas. She took her time and just began gathering images that appealed to her. She began to gather the images by doing things that appealed to her. She dug out her camera and started taking pictures. She began to sketch again. She wrote letters to herself. She touched things and felt them. She explored, not with just her mind, but with all of her senses.

I have answered the question “What do I want?” in various ways in written journal exercises, and one time I did do a an affirmation journal with pictures, but, I’ve never answered this question in such a visual, tactile way.

I want to try this.

What do you think? Would you like to join me? Do you want to go exploring with me?

How to play:

All you need to start is some glue or tape, a piece of poster paper (any color you want) and a place to hang it where you can see it everyday. Or, can you can use a large bulletin board and push pins.

Each day you will take time to reflect on the question “What do I want?”

Then begin to gather images, words and anything else that appeals to you. Then slowly just start adding them to your art journal/dream board. There is no rush. I expect this project to last several weeks as we explore and have fun.

I’ll post a picture of my art journal/dream board once a week, every Wednesday.

If you decide to join me you can participate on your own or share your images with me and I’ll post them here along with my own. You can also share what the process is showing you and what you are learning.

So, “What do you want?”

Do you want to join me? Leave a reply and let’s go exploring.

I’ll post the first picture of my art journal/vision board on Wednesday.
