A few months ago I posted on Twitter that I was pondering what I would I take with me on a bus trip across the United States if I traveled with just my backpack.
Now I am wondering what if… instead of a bus trip, maybe a train ride cross country OR maybe on a motorcycle trip-I have my license and even though I haven’t rode in awhile, I am sure I remember – now THAT’S an idea!)
Now, I’ve never actually done this, traveling across the country, (not yet, anyway) so some experienced travelers and backpackers might slam my list, but this is how I’d start out…
Sandy’s Backpack List for Traveling Across the US:
- Snacks…cheerios and trail mix.
- Books…I think I’d have to have it set up so I could rotate them. Depending on how long I’d be traveling I could send s few home and have new ones shipped to me as I traveled from place to place. Plus, since I’d visit every bookstore I came across, I’d be buying books, too. I read 99% non-fiction and read whatever strikes my fancy. I’d start with two books on my ‘to read’ list and then go from there.
- U-Turn: What If You Woke Up One Morning and Realized You Were Living the Wrong Life?
- Awakening the Heroes Within: Twelve Archetypes to Help Us Find Ourselves and Transform Our World
(Yes, I know I have my Amazon Kindle listed below, but I still love the feel, the smell and the experience of holding real books in my hands. Sometimes it is the only way I can relax.)
- U-Turn: What If You Woke Up One Morning and Realized You Were Living the Wrong Life?
- Electronic gadgets...Laptop, air card, Kindle,
iPod,
cellphone, Flip UltraHD Camcorder
and chargers (This may be too much, but if it was I could always pack some of them up and mail them back home.)
- Other ‘me’ essentials…Yellow legal pad, two purple pens, oil pastels, pencil, pocket pencil sharpener, a ruler and a sketch pad. (these are non-negotiable!)
- Toiletries…Well, first I’d make sure I had short, easy to manage hair (any excuse to cut my hair is a good one), I’d wouldn’t be wearing any make up (again, any excuse is a good one), I would want to keep it as light as possible and I would buy or replace what I needed as I went along. I’d start with a toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, travel size shampoo/conditioner, hair gel, deodorant, powder.
- Clothes…in addition to what I was wearing: two pairs of jeans, two long sleeve t-shirts two short sleeve t-shirts, one sweatshirt, one ‘dressy’ blouse, four sets of socks/underwear/bras, a lightweight jacket, one pair of lounge/pajamas and a baseball cap. No fancy clothes, pure travel comfort.
What do you think? Did I over pack? Under pack? What would you take that I didn’t?
Bus? Train? Plane? or Motorcycle??? (go ahead, choose motorcycle, I know you want to)

Moira, you are so awesome. I know you alter ego does this every year. Thanks for the tips!!
sandy,
DO IT!!! the motorcycle trip!!! YES!!!!!
and just pack the bare essentials. i find that no matter how efficiently i pack, i always have too much with me. i always get home to find a pair of socks, a shirt or two and a pair of pants at the bottom of my bag that never got worn.
lots of clean underwear and warm layers. a camera, yes, a tent and sleepingbag, rain gear and that’s about it:)
[...] been thinking about the list I posted on Friday, the list of what I would pack if I was traveling cross-country, had to travel light and could take [...]
I like your ideas and I know that one day I will do this. Luckily for me I know friends on the west coast! Thanks.
I think you need to test this out, Sandy. A solo cross country trip is an extreme personal growth experience. I’m adding a voice recorder to my list because the ideas flow when I travel and must stop writing while driving. A few suggestions: Jeans take up too much room-pack knits. Used bookstores-trade 2 for 2 each stop. If you drive, load your Ipod with audio books.
IPrint bookmarks with your name, url and email address to give to people you meet.
Is the ruler really non-negotiable? I’d live dangerously and take an UNruled writing pad as well.
Oh, and the addresses of west coast friends-just in case you make it this far!
Now, that sounds like an adventure!
Hey, that was the name of my motorcycle, I rode a Honda Rebel. I think I overpacked.
Hansel and I actually traveled cross country a little over three years ago from Cleveland, Ohio to Phoenix, Arizona in the middle of July in a jeep with no air conditioning and unbelievable amount of mileage on it!! We had our dog and two cats with us…whioh I would not suggest to anyone!
But..when you asked this question a few things we had jumped into my mind immediately: camera with extra memory cards and batteries, lots of loose change for all the toll booths, a really good map (–not just yahoo driving directions!!!!), mad libs, and a travel size buddha!
A sense of humor comes in handy too!
Peace & Love.
I’m looking for some good books for my upcoming train ride – I may need to check those out!
I don’t go anywhere without my Canon Rebel. But I’m quite happy to leave my cell phone at home (and usually do, much to the chagrin of my husband).
