A friend recently said that book reviews are written whether you like a book or not. I was worried I might be doing it wrong so I Googled ‘define book reviews’. Here are a few of the answers I found:
- A critical review of a book (usually a recently published book.)
- A critical appraisal of a book (often reflecting a reviewer’s personal opinion or recommendation.)
- A book review is a brief summary and criticism of a book. It is written shortly after a book is published.
I think I need to define ‘Book Reviews’ from The Dreaming Cafe’s point of view. Here are my ideas of a book review:
- The book may be recently published or may have been in print for awhile. There is no publication or copyright date restriction.
- 99% of the books will still be in print and available.
- I will not write about books I do not like. (I usually won’t even finish reading them.)
- I write book recommendation reviews.
- Every review will be different and will not follow any pre-determined format.
- I will share with you a few points of interest, maybe summarize the books concepts, share a few points I paticluarly liked and maybe share how the book and the author’s ideas impacted my life.
- Most of the books I will review will be non-fiction, with an occasional novel thrown in to keep things interesting.
- The books may be ones I have read in the past, just finished, or may be one I am currently reading.
- Basically these ‘book reviews’ are book recommendations, books I have enjoyed and found helpful on my journey; books I feel may help you depending on where you are on your own “creative journey of self-discovery“.
- Subjects are wide ranging and may include, but not be limited to: business and entrepreneurship; marketing; personal growth and self-development; psychology; nutrition, diet and health; mind-body science; spirituality; memoir and biography; creativity; art; writing; landscape design; architecture and home design; and sustainable living.
Now, for today’s Book Recommendation Review:
Since I view entrepreneurship as a part of my personal and spiritual journey, more of a calling than a get rich scheme, I initially avoided Dan Kennedy’s “No B.S.” series of books. They appeared to be so over the top, more in the genre of ‘get all you can as fast as you can and run.’
But, I was wrong. I have read several of Dan Kennedy’s books and have found them to be a great source of ideas and a way to expand my thinking about business and marketing. He is really big on customer service and delivering more than you promise. He promotes striving to be the best of the best.
When I need some quick motivation to keep me going I just grab one of Dan’s books from my bookshelf and open to a random chapter. Within twenty or thirty minutes I am back in the game and ready to go.
Like I said, these book may not appeal to everyone, but give them a chance. Listed below are four of my favorites. If you haven’t read any of them, pick one and let me know what you think.
